A tragic accident on Sunday morning, July 16, along the CE-060 highway between Caririaçu and Juazeiro do Norte, has left the Cariri region in mourning. The crash claimed the lives of an entire family: three-year-old Miguel Nascimento Gomes, Sebastião Cícero Gomes, and Hérida Nascimento da Silva.
The family had been traveling from Várzea Alegre to Juazeiro do Norte—a journey that typically takes about an hour. Their destination was a hospital, where young Miguel was scheduled to undergo surgery. That hopeful trip turned into a devastating tragedy.
According to the Ceará Military Fire Department and reports from TV Verdes Mares, the car veered off the road around 7 a.m. and crashed into a stream near Sítio Piripiri. The stream’s depth, estimated at five meters, made rescue efforts difficult and ultimately led to the drowning of all three occupants.
The cause of the vehicle’s loss of control remains under investigation, raising questions about the safety and conditions of the CE-060 highway.
